Manual J Load Calculations

Accurate HVAC sizing begins here.

Manual J is the industry-standard calculation used to determine the precise heating and cooling needs of a home. Developed by ACCA and ASHRAE, this method considers everything from your home’s thermal envelope (walls, roof, windows, insulation) to internal factors like people, appliances, and even aquariums. It also uses climate-specific weather data and your personal lifestyle preferences—such as thermostat set points—to determine the seasonal heat gain and loss your HVAC system must handle.

At Rightway Performance, we use ELITE Soft RHVAC Professional software to generate highly accurate reports. These reports reveal how many BTUs and CFM (cubic feet per minute of airflow) each room or space requires to stay comfortable year-round. This is a critical first step toward “right-sizing” your HVAC system—moving away from outdated rules of thumb and toward a performance-driven approach that improves comfort, efficiency, and system longevity.

To properly specify HVAC equipment, both a J and an S are required. If you're an HVAC installer and plan to do your own S selection by ACCA standards, then J is all you need.

Manual J & S Load Calculations

Matching the right equipment to the right load.

While Manual J calculations help determine the heating and cooling needs of a home, Manual S ensures the HVAC equipment selected can actually deliver what’s required in the real world. Many homeowners and even contractors make the mistake of choosing equipment based on manufacturer specifications—without realizing those specs are tested under ideal conditions that don’t reflect actual climate zones or homeowner preferences.

Manual S uses detailed manufacturer data (often dealer-only access) to select the exact equipment size and configuration needed to meet the load determined by your Manual J report. This selection process factors in real-world variables like outdoor temperature, humidity, and system airflow—all of which affect how much heating or cooling your equipment can truly provide.

Oversized units can lead to high indoor humidity, increased energy costs, and shorter equipment life. Undersized units often leave homeowners frustrated with poor performance. Manual S prevents both scenarios by right-sizing your equipment to match your home’s specific needs and climate.

Manual D Load Calculations

Delivering comfort where it counts.

Manual D is the final piece in the right-sizing puzzle—after calculating your home’s heating and cooling load (Manual J) and selecting the right equipment (Manual S), the next step is to ensure that air actually reaches each room efficiently. That’s where Manual D comes in.

Most installers still rely on outdated rules of thumb like the “Ductulator,” which assumes a 6-inch duct can always deliver 100 CFM of airflow. But that approach ignores critical factors like the selected equipment, system airflow, and static pressure limits. The result? Duct systems that are too noisy, inefficient, or incapable of delivering enough heating or cooling where you need it most.

At Rightway Performance, we use your Manual J and Manual S data to generate a custom duct design that maps out how much airflow (CFM) each room needs and ensures the design stays within manufacturer specifications. This creates a strong foundation for installers, reducing the guesswork and ensuring a quieter, more comfortable, and more efficient HVAC system.
